I wish everyone a happy, healthy and blessed Easter! 4 years ago I was lucky to visit fascinating, incredible Jerusalem and to live for two weeks in the heart of the city. In the middle of the world-famous historical bazaar! Our quarters were in the parish hall of the Evangelical Church of the Redeemer, which is located in the middle of the old town. From our romantic, neo-Byzantine style windows we had, to one side, a view of an ancient minaret, a French church tower from the 18th century, and could just catch a glimpse of the dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on the right (on the other side of our flat we had a view onto the Dome of the Rock …).
And the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built on Golgotha, at the point where Jesus was crucified, is still one of the greatest experiences of a church that I have ever had. The house is like a huge coral reef, where swarms of believers of all different Christian denominations cavort and refresh themselves on their faith. The Muslims have the key power over the house, which I think is a good regulation. I thought it was beautiful! Above is a watercolor that I made on site (the watercolor paper was unfortunately not the best, even though it was of a good manufacturer, so the colors didn’t respond quite the way I wanted, also in the scan of it. I tried my best to get the most out of it). And below is a photo of a page from my sketchbook that I had with me on the trip, which shows a perspective into the winding interior of this incredible church building, which has grown over centuries. And that was just one of countless fascinating corners …
