UNPUBLISHED – Comic Exhibition at the Ludwiggalerie Oberhausen

October 3rd, 2021 – January 16th, 2022, Ludwiggalerie at Schloss Oberhausen, Northrhine-Westfalia

I’m looking forward to the weekend and this exhibition in the Ludwiggalerie in Schloss Oberhausen: ‘Unpublished’ shows works by German comic artists that have been slumbering in the drawers, i.e. projects that have not yet found a publisher or any other means of publication. Every now and then comic artists work on projects where it’s either unclear if they will ever see the light of day or if it’s intended that they will be published. There can be many different reasons why projects were first considered and then not pursued, and the exhibition also tries to get to the bottom of this fact and brings together originals by well-known German comic artists. I am represented with works on my two gay adventure comic heroes Damian & Alexander and will be there for the vernissage on September 2nd, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. I look forward to seeing you there!

Keynote Speech at WISSVibes

September 17 + 18, 2021, 4-6 pm (Friday) + 9.30 am-5 pm (Saturday), barcamp (in ZOOM)

I’m really looking forward to this online barcamp, where I’m a speaker! It’s WISSVibes21!

WISSVibes is a project by Tanja Wehr, which has set itself the goal of spreading knowledge culture (“Knowing is the new sexy”) through events such as this barcamp. In case you wonder, A barcamp means that there is a fixed schedule, but the topics are not so strictly defined in advance. Similar to conferences, speakers are booked about 6 months in advance and everything is packed up and ready, but at the event itself there is enough space and time to have the interesting conversations during the breaks because of which we all are attending, too.

I will be there with a keynote speech at the event taking place in ZOOM. My topic is: “‘Getting knowledge among the people – edutainment in comics and children’s books”. As you can see from my works shown here on this site, I illustrate non-fiction books and comics that repeatedly incorporate historical facts on the visual and narrative level. In my talk, I want to show my approach to researching and incorporating these facts into my work, and how they influence both the illustration and the narrative.

I will hold my speech on Saturday morning. But you can also find out more about the program of the barcamp here.

I would love to see you on the other side of the screen at the weekend! See ya!

WAR OF THE WORLDS Graphic Novel: Workshop Talk and Book Signing at Planet Comics in Erfurt

August 7th, 2021, Planet Comics Erfurt, Eichenstraße 7, 99084 Erfurt (Thuringia, Germany)

Next Saturday, August 7th, 2021, I’ll be in the comic shop Planet Comics in beautiful Erfurt at 3:00 p.m. I will present you the new color edition of WAR OF THE WORLDS (Carlsen Comics) and in addition to a workshop talk with me, where I will tell you about the creation of the graphic novel and my work behind it, I will of course sign the book :).

I’m really looking forward to seeing you there!

Musical Reading of WAR OF THE WORLDS

May 28th, 8:00 p.m., live at the Youtube channel of Carlsen Comics

Together with the musician Jörg Walter, Carlsen Comics and I will stage my graphic novel adaption of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS in a multimedia experience. The musical reading provides an extraordinary impression of the comic book, which will be published on June 29, 2021. The graphic novel captivates with accuracy the Victorian setting and atmospherically captures both the dramatic and satirical elements of the classic Wells novella.

In an interview with Matthias Wieland, I’ll give you a live look ‘behind the scenes’ and report on my working process on the graphic novel. The whole event will be streamed live on the Facebook and YouTube channel of Carlsen Comics on May 28th, 8 p.m.!

Here is the link to the Carlsen Comics Youtube channel.

You can find all further information on the new color edition of WAR OF THE WORLDS at Carlsen here.

Something to sweeten the waiting time

Something is missing when you can’t do live presentations of your new book. But for known reasons it’s not possible right now.

In order to sweeten the waiting time until the next reading for me and you, I am showing you a little trailer for a reading concert – a format that the musician Jörg Walter and I have developed. While I am reading from a book, and it’s pictures are shown on a screen, he improvises the right music on a historical reed organ to that. We already did this kind of reading for my graphic novel on H.G. Wells’ WAR OF THE WORLDS – the trailer below shows a new reading of this format that combines my picture book THE LIGHTS OF PARIS – ÉMILE AT THE WORLD FAIR and my graphic novel adaptation of 20,000 MILES UNDER THE SEA, which is currently in progress. We look forward to holding such readings again as soon as the situation allows it!
