Any character in WAR OF THE WORLDS of course wears contemporary clothing. In addition to other sources (like a compendium about fashion of the 1898 summer season, where my adaption takes place)I also used old photos from family photo albums as source material.
I was particularly taken with this coat because it clearly shows a reform dress aspect and thus could bring more visual diversity into the otherwise very sensational fashion of the period. Usual clothing of the late 19th century had many applications such as ruffles and feathers. Using dresses like the one in this photograph gave me the opportunity to bring a different visual effect into the crowd scenes and make them more diverse, depicting the time more realistically and thus more believable.
