Musical Reading of ÉMILE IN BERLIN – MOUSE HUNT AT THE BIG STORE at the Hoffnungskirche Pankow

February 16th, 4 pm, Ev. Hoffnungskirche Pankow, Elsa-Brändström-Straße 36, 13189 Berlin

After staring the year with a new reading concert (a reading with music) of one of my very favorite books, ÉMILE IN BERLIN – MOUSE HUNT IN THE BIG STORE at the Johanneskirche Frohnau in Berlin in January, I’m delighted to share with you that we are doing the concert again in a beautiful Art Nouveau church in Berlin-Pankow on February 16th!

Berlin, in the winter of 1904: Émile and his mother Alice visit the newly opened Wertheim department store on Leipziger Platz in Berlin. But in the zoo department, the mishap happens: a little mouse escapes from a terrarium through Émile’s fault! Marie, the young sales clerk, fears she will be fired if it comes out that it happened during her watch. Émile and Marie try to catch the little runaway by chasing it through the vast and beautiful store – but how are the chances to catch a little rodent in a department store the size of an entire block?

In the reading, accompanied by live music by Jörg Walter, we lead you into the speedy and exciting history of department stores around 1900. While magnificent illustrations run before your eyes, I read the text live, and Jörg plays specially composed motifs for the mouse, Marie, Émile and the Wertheim department store itself. In a workshop report following the reading, I talk about how historical material like this can be transferred into a story and give an outline of the history of department stores and the Wertheim store in particular, specifically addressing the culture abnd history of Jewish department stores. A limited amount of copies is available and can be signed at the event.

An atmospheric event for young and old! Entry is free (the church kindly asks for a donation)!

(The event will be in German)

On October 27th at 5 p.m. the musician Jörg Walter and I will perform our popular musical reading of my graphic novel adaption of Jules Verne’s beloved classic (Carlsen Comics) at the “Vivo Kulturkirche am See” in Berlin(-Tegel). It’s going to be great fun again!
In the reading concert we all dive into Jules Verne’s fantastic underwater worlds: While the pictures from the graphic novel roll before your eyes, I read the scenes from the comic live to the music of Jörg Walter, who plays live on a historical reed organ, and the adventures of Captain Nemos and his passengers come to life!

Afterwards I give a small report about the creative process behind the adaption with insights into the work of a comic artist. You are welcome to ask me any questions about my work! The book can also be signed during the evening.
